Universe Wooden Vase
Description This Universe Wooden Vase is turned on a wood lathe. Once the wood vase form is complete I will spend more time finishing the vase to tell a story. I cut a recess into the top rim and hand place each color pencil into the cutout. Then, I flood the rim with tinted resin to fill the voids and seal the pencils in place. I go back to the lathe to trim the pencils and bring the piece to life. Now I add graphic elements using pyrography and the airbrush to complete

Life Cycle Bowl
Life Cycle Bowl features a piece of Norfolk Island Pine (NIP) wood. In the United States NIP only grows in Florida and Hawaii. I believe that it is the only tree where the branches grow in concentric layers. This is unlike other trees where the branches grow randomly. This piece does not have any knots, but you can see them in this piece. These knots appear as eyes looking out into the world. This Life Cycle Bowl features symbols that tell the story of life on earth. Sym

Award for Genesis Platter
Award for Genesis Platter is a commission piece for family honoring their dad. A Cherry Tree was planted by the family and grew at the grave site. Eventually the tree became so large that it began to cause damage near the grave. The son spoke with the authorities at the cemetery into allowing him to secure large logs from the tree anticipating that family heirlooms could be made from the wood. The son phoned me and asked if I would make some items for his mother, sister an

Crisscross Apple Sauce Vase
Culture Issues Crisscross Apple Sauce Vase Inspiration for this piece is from Native American pottery. One day playing with my four year old granddaughter I asked her to sit Indian Style for a photo. Her reply is that I should not say “Sit Indian Style” and that the correct saying is to sit “Crisscross Apple Sauce.” Therefore this is not a Native American Style Vase, but a Crisscross Apple Sauce Vase. I am still not sure I understand why this correction is taking place in o

Angry Wood Sea Urchin
Description Angry Wood Sea Urchin is a wood sculpture taking many attempts and several months to complete. My goal is to recreate in wood a ceramic sculpture I own. The ceramic piece features a texture similar to volcanic rock flowing out of a small opening at the top. I could not get it quite right. I abandoned that path and pursued a vegetable shape. Very unhappy with the progress of this second attempt I set the piece aside for many months. By this time I am creating

Climbing Vines Vase
Description Climbing Vines Vase is a thin wall maple vase features a simple pyrography vine growing up along the sides of the vase. The size is 4 inches tall by 3 inches in diameter. This was a transition piece for me. My goal was to make a form with a very thin wall. Up to this point my bowls and vases had thicker walls. A new turner wants every piece to be something. At some point a Maker must be ready to take chances to expand boundaries in order to improve the skill

Wood Tadpole Egg Vase
Tadpoles and Not Sperm Wood Tadpole Egg Vase. Every turner enjoys making eggs. These tadpoles are drawn onto the wood with a pyrography tool which is a wood burner. Hollow Forms The style of this Wood Tadpole Egg Vase is a Hollow Form. The artist makes a small entry hole and remo

Basket Weave Hollow Form
Description This Basket Weave Hollow Form vase is Apple wood. Hollow form is a style of wood turning on the lathe where the artist makes a small entry hole and removes the wood with special tools. The tools look like hooks and the maker goes through the cutting process not being able to witness the wood removal. This takes lots of practice to develop the skill level. Pyrography Pyrography creates the basket weave texture which is branding wood with a red hot wire. An art
