Wood Jewelry Pendants

Wood Jewelry

Group of turned Maple Burl and Bradford Pear pendants on adjustable leather cords with various metal findings and beads.  By tugging on the two ends the pendant adjusts to the best length for comfort.  These wood jewelry necklaces and pendants represent my initial designs when I began to explore wood jewelry design.

My wife used to stop in every bead store when we would travel.  I hated every minute of it.  Now, it is me leading the way into a bead store.  I am also the one with a library of jewelry supply catalogs. From making pendants I went to bracelets, bangles and earrings.  I use a variety of materials including color pencils, acorns, seed pods, cinnamon sticks and resin to make these designs.  These are a great conversation pieces and will gain attention with any outfit.

Studio

These pendants as with all my jewelry is handmade by me in my studio in Montvale, NJ, USA.  My primary tool is a wood lathe.  This machine allows me to make forms from two hundred pound logs or small pieces of jewelry from blocks of wood three inches cubed.  I began turning when I was inspired by a stunning wood bowl that I saw in a gallery.  I was looking to return to my design roots which were abandoned for thirty years as I was doing design work for corporations.  This bowl inspired me to take some lessons and then to purchase the tools.  It is an addictive process to make a shape by peeling away layers of wood and revealing the interior grain.
