Description
This shallow Midnight Platter is Tulipwood, also known as Poplar. The color was rather bland so I carve groves and added black stain color.
Midnight Platter came about because I am unhappy with the bland nature of Poplar wood. In order to fix it and make it more interesting I carve groove patterns on both the interior and exterior and then stain it with black leather dye. There are turners who will never paint wood. They are known as “Wood Purists” and I do get grief from them for painting wood. This is ridiculous. For me wood is a canvas and it grows on trees. What if there are “Canvas Purists?” There would be a lot of white paintings. That would make a fun trip to the museum. My signature, Alan Adler is on the base. Studio
All items on this website are from my studio in New Jersey, USA. The main tool is the wood lathe to create the form. Secondary operations like carving and adding colors take place at the workbench. The amount of time at the bench can exceed the time on the lathe.
