Fragile X Carved Vase is a gift for Dr. Randi Hagerman. She is a top research doctor in the at the University of California at Davis. Her team is doing state of the art genetic research. I am a volunteer at the Mind Institute in their research program. I carry a gene that creates a specific protein. Isolating this genetic material shows strong evidence towards successful treatments and potential cures. It is heartbreaking to see these children with limited mental developmental abilities. Not to mention the parents desperate to help their children evolve into fully functioning individuals.
What is Fragile X Syndrome?
Fragile X Syndrome (FXS) is the most common genetic cause of intellectual disability. Also, the most common known single-gene mutation leading to autism spectrum disorders. The clinical features of FXS range from mild emotional, sensory and learning problems to severe intellectual disabilities and autism.
Medical Research
I visit the Sacramento campus approximately once every three years or when grant money is available. Treatments and potential cures for Fragile X Syndrome, FXTAS and Autism are under investigation at the MIND Institute. It is humbling to be able to contribute to this research. It is an honor and a personal obligation to be a part of scientific progress that will help these families. During my most recent visit I gave this Fragile X Carved Vase to Dr. Hagerman for all that she is doing.
Inspiration
Very often I get inspiration from nature, Plants, Leaves and Seed. Here the inspiration is from science and genetics. In addition I find ideas to explore by studying the master artists. This includes, Matisse, Magritte, Stella and Mondrian to name a few.
