Ambrosia Sunset Platter

Description

Ambrosia Sunset Platter shows what happens when the Ambrosia Beetle attacks maple trees and leaves behind these incredible markings.  On this piece the Beetle shows great skill as a landscape painter.

Ambrosia Sunset Platter is handmade on a wood lathe.  This is an ambrosia maple platter with gorgeous grain and incredible markings that appear to be a sunset over the ocean. The markings are from insect damage by the Ambrosia Beetle that infests the maple tree. As they eat through the tree they create a  chemical reaction which forms these streaks.  See the dots in the markings?  These are holes where the beetle enters and exits the wood.  They create their own art, but the tree will eventually die.  All of my bowls and platters are signed on the bottom and they are also food safe.

Picture the gorgeous wood platter as a centerpiece your table. This beautiful home decor item has already been sold by a gallery. If you would like an Ambrosia platter let me know as I do accept commissions.

All items are handmade in my studio in Montvale, NJ USA. The wood lathe is my primary tool.  I use this machine to create the form.  Once I am happy with the shape I will take it to the workbench to enhanced with secondary operations.

Care for Wood items

  1. Keep out of direct sunlight and minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels

  2. Do not wash with water, but if necessary use a damp cloth

  3. Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore the luster.  I like beeswax, walnut oil or mineral oil.
