This Acorn and Resin Vase is a casting of acorns in blue resin. I then turn the block on a wood lathe into a vase. Mother Nature and her products are often a source of inspiration for my art. I experiment and produce many pieces featurIng plant life, trees, seed pods and leaves. Another source of inspiration is the sea. There is a series of sea urchins and starfish.
I cast seed pods and plant products into jewelry using acorns, pinecones, cinnamon sticks and anise star spices. It is amazing to see these natural objects transform into unique geometric organic products. Most often the viewer is drawn to these unique pieces. They try to figure out what the item is that is floating in the resin. There are wild guesses to total confusion. When I tell them they look closer and usually respond with a “Wow.”
The process to make this Acorn and Resin Vase involves casting acorns in blue epoxy resin. The block is then secured to the lathe and I turn the vase form. Next I coat the vase with a clear resin to enhance the color and provide exceptional protection. The acorns come to life and take on a new life.
It is fun asking my friends to guess what is in the vase I have yet to have someone identify the acorns or even a plant form.
