Springtime Bowl

Description

Springtime Bowl is part of a series of 40 antique European and Asian bowl lids produced in the 1700 and 1800’s.   They were missing their bases.  This lid is European.  The overall size is 3 inch diameter by 2 high.

Springtime Bowl is Walnut that is dyed green, carved with a pyrography technique for the branches and dry brush painted with acrylics.  I was looking to achieve the brilliant blooms of white dogwoods and cherry blossoms.

The process to design a wood base is interesting and challenging. It was a two year journey to develop a wood base for every lid.  There are an infinite amount of design decisions and choices to be made.

Antiquing Find

My wife and I were weekend antiquing and we came across these lids missing bases.  Curious as to why the lids are on display, the shop owner explains that traders have drawers filled with lids hoping to find a matching base.  I tell him that I am a woodturner and promise to make new bases for the lids.  He agrees to sell me eight pieces.  I return a few weeks later to show him what I made and gift him the one he likes best.

Asking to purchase the remaining lids he opens a drawer where they are now out of sight. He basically gifts them to me with the promise that I show him how the series develops.

Studio

I design and produce my items in my Montvale New Jersey USA studio. My favorite machine is the wood lathe, but I will spend as much time at the workbench doing finishing work to complete the decoration.
