Description This Universe Wooden Vase is turned on a wood lathe. Once the wood vase form is complete I will spend more time finishing the vase to tell a story. I cut a recess into the top rim and hand place each color pencil into the cutout. Then, I flood the rim with tinted resin to fill the voids and seal the pencils in place. I go back to the lathe to trim the pencils and bring the piece to life. Now I add graphic elements using pyrography and the airbrush to complete
Description Ocean Burl Bowl features incredible color effects that take place when applying dyes to Burl. Here the blue dye transforms this bowl into a deep ocean. Natural Burl with a proper finish is naturally beautiful so it becomes a difficult decision to add dye to a burl bowl that is complete. The effect is immediate and permanent so it is always a gamble the maker may not like the result. I approach this process with apprehension, but I have never been disappointed.
Airbrushed Oak Burl Bowl is a collaboration with insects. There was a time when I would throw away wood that was in this condition. Now I seek it out. My theory is that the uglier the wood log the more beautiful will be the finished bowl. Airbrushed Oak Burl Bowl with dyes is handmade on a wood lathe.
