Winning Ambrosia Bowl

Winning ambrosia bowl was made during my first year of turning and judged by David Ellsworth and Giles Gilson. Both legends in the wood turning arena. The award is second place at Totally Turning in Saratoga, NY in 2010 in the category for New Turners.  The size is 10 x 6 inches. I had a chance to spend a few hours with Giles discussing the craft and how I  see myself fitting in to this craft.

This Ambrosia Bowl is of the Maple Species. It is turned on a wood lathe. The Ambrosia Beatles enter the wood and creates these wonderful markings. Each piece of wood has different markings. The markings are from insect damage as the beatles infest the tree. As they eat through the fibers they leave behind these brown markings.  See the dots in the markings, these are holes where the beatles enter and exit the wood.  Eventually the tree will  die.

How to Care for Wood Bowls

  1. Keep out of direct sunlight and minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels

  2. Do not wash with water, but if necessary use a damp cloth

  3. Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore the luster.  I like beeswax, walnut oil or mineral oil.
