Where It Started Vase began my woodturning journey. I love this wood and it is the reason I am a wood artist today. Each piece is full of surprises with crazy color variations from light to dark. The six red spots are where the branches radiate. It is the only tree where branches grow in concentric layers. Other trees grow branches in a random order. My Journey Into Wood Turning
Norfolk Island Pine grows in Florida and Hawaii. I first saw this wood in a gallery in Southampton, New York. The gallery specializes in contemporary paintings. At the rear of the gallery was an incredible wooden bowl on a pedestal. As I was studying it, the owner came up to me. He explained it was made by Ron Kent a Hawaiian artist who was retiring. This bowl would be an excellent investment.
Knowing nothing about woodturning, Norfolk Island Pine or Ron Kent I needed to know the cost. The price is $3000. The idea of making that investment was blown out of the water. However, I had the brilliant idea that for $3000 I would take lessons and purchase the equipment so that I could make bowls like this. Several months later I found a place offering lessons. I left the store with a $2000 lathe and the necessary tools.
This started in 2009 and the addiction is as strong as ever. There is something special about peeling away layers of wood to expose hidden colors, textures and forms.
