We Are Having A Baby Vase is inspired by the art of Keith Haring. It was made as a gift for my son and daughter-in-law celebrating the birth of our second grandson, Jack Sawer. This Ash wood vase features turning, carving, stain, paint and a gold leaf baby. Notice the stack of figures, father, mother, brother and new baby on top of each other like a totem pole. The size is approximately 12 inches tall by 5 inches in diameter.
I draw inspiration from many places. Besides Mother Nature famous artists are a major source of ideas. Matisse, Mondrian, Stella, Magritte and now Haring are part of my portfolio. Although, Haring’s images appear simple to duplicate they are rather difficult to recreate with the balance and motion he is famous for in his art. Keith became well known for being a street artist with a cult following. Not so much interested in monetary gain he would paint on handball court walls and subways. He was all over the place. His brand created an empire in the art world, but unfortunately he died of aids at an early age. I always loved the baby symbol and this was a perfect opportunity to give it a go. It is a symbol that I will revisit. Here is Stella Meets Mondrian

I design and create all of my art in my studio in Montvale, New Jersey, USA. The lathe is the go to tool for creating the form whether it be a vase of a bowl. Then I will spend even more time at the workbench adding decoration. This includes carving, piercing, painting, staining and anything else that will enhance the art.
