Seating Stool Furniture Commission

Commission Furniture

Seating Stool Furniture Commission for ten seating logs made from various wood species including Mape, Oak, Walnut, Ash, Beech and Cherry. The client and I drew out the shapes he would like to see in his home. The starting weight for each log was 200 pounds. I thought I would die moving the logs down the steps into the studio. Mounting them on the lathe was only possible after purchasing an engine hoist.

Each seat has a unique shape and the wood a specific character for color and texture. These Seating Stool Furniture Commission pieces are movable seating elements as well as wood sculptures. This was my most challenging commission to date due to the logistics moving heavy logs and mounting them on the lathe. Once on the lathe the process was rather simple. It is always exciting to watch the various forms take hold as layers of wood peel away from the log. Here is another commission for a country table

Gift Ideas and Commission Projects

Studio

I design and produce all original items in my studio in Montvale, New Jersey. USA. My primary tool is the wood lathe. This is how the shape takes place. Once I accomplish the form the piece goes to the workbench for details and proper finishing with a protective coating. These pieces required time to stabilize and allow for the moisture content to be reduced. On thick pieces of wood checking and cracking will always occur as the wood dries. This adds character to the piece so it does not look like a perfect machine made item.
