Oliver’s Wood Planets is a birthday gift to my Grandson Oliver. He made a request for the Solar System for his fourth birthday. What Grandfather would not deliver? Oliver has a strong interest in Space and the Galaxies. These wood planets were turned on a lathe.
I enjoy making special gifts like this Oliver’s Wood Planets for the grandchildren for their birthdays and try to make a gift that is relevant to their current interest. A very special gift happens at age 2 when they get a theme Adirondack Chair based on their interests at the time. Here is the Tool Chair for Oliver.
Every culture has made wooden toys for children for generations dating back to the Stone Age (2000 BC). The vintage toys were usually axes and bows as well as dolls. The intention was to teach children both survival and family skills and secondary to entertain them. Egyptians created entertaining toys and playthings.

Studio
I design all my items in my studio in Montvale, New Jersey, USA. While my main tool is the wood lathe. I find that I am spending as much time at the workbench refining my items. This is the special effects area. Here I carve, pierce, stain, paint, and use pyrography which is a wood burning technique. Many of my items have symbols representing water, land, the galaxy and this is the tool I use. Here is an art piece where I use pyrography to develop texture.
