Manzanita Burl Root Bowl

Manzanita wood has incredible character.  This Manzanita Burl Root Bowl comes from a section of the tree root. Although it is very time consuming to process Manzanita, the battle is worthwhile.

Manzanita root burl is on the top of my list for one of the most beautiful woods I get to work with.  No other wood that offers such organic natural features. At the same time Manzanita is probably the most difficult wood I fabricate. It is filled with rocks, sand and dirt which quickly dulls the cutting tools. The battle to tame Manzanita is long, but the final results are well worth it. Wood doesn’t get much prettier than this.

Each piece is a struggle and half way through I swear never to work with this wood again. But, when the piece is complete the beauty of the wood speaks for itself. I imagine that my temptation is stronger than my common sense and I will continue to work with this wood.

This exotic wood is bought from a California logger who digs up the root burls after a wildfire. Manzanita is a protected species as it should be.
