I never heard of Duck Pin Bowling until a friend’s son took it up and became a ranking player. On the edge of the alley there was a ball with a small chip. I knew that I would be able to make a special gift out of that ball so I asked if I could have it. I drilled a hole into the chip and then with special tools hollowed out the interior. Then I turned a bowling pin as a finial lid. Finally I buffed and polished the old ball to restore the original luster. It will be a surprise when he gets it back over the holidays.
This Duck Pin Bowling ball was a fun project to repurpose an item that was no longer useful for its original purpose. I am now looking for old bowling balls to see what I can do with them. Recently I got a hold of some vintage billiard balls and I am making them into desk clocks.
When I began turning wood was the material for all my objects. Then I started to make jewelry with resin and saw how easy it was to get beautiful and unique results turning resin. Next I added resin to my bowls and vases with color pencil inlay. This is how I got the idea that I could turn a bowling ball. Here is a bowl with a color pencil resin rim. Studio
I make all my items in my Montvale, New Jersey, USA studio. My time is divided between the lathe and completing decorative processes performed at the workbench. I may spend as much time at the bench refining the object as I did forming it at the lathe.
