Dancing on Air Award

First Place Award in Carving for Dancing on Air Vase at the Totally Turning Symposium in Saratoga in 2016. This piece is inspired by Matisse’s painting “The Dance” hanging in the Museum of Modern Art, NYC.  Matisse is one of my favorite artists.

This piece of wood art starts by turning a vase shape on a wood lathe, then drawing the dancers.  Over several days at the studio bench I am carving, piercing and sanding.  The Bradford Pear wood has beautiful grain markings from the growth rings. The overall size is approximately 5 1/2 inches in diameter at the top by 5 inches tall tapering to a 2 inch base with carved feet. My signature, is on the bottom.

This Dancing on Air Award winning bowl is a perfect Display Piece.  With proper lighting it casts great shadows.  If you want to see other Matisse inspired pieces to take a look at Matisse Falling Leaves

Studio

This is a One of a Kind piece as are all the items I make in my studio in Montvale, New Jersey, USA.  I sell only the products that I design and produce.  My primary machine is the wood lathe to make the form.  Once the shape is complete it moves to the workbench for secondary operations like carving, piercing and a protective finish.
