Carved Matisse Vase

Description

Matisse is a source of inspiration for his flowing lines and organic shapes. The Carved Matisse Vase leaves in this piece are inspired from his paper cutting period when he could no longer hold a brush due to illness.

Carved Matisse Vase is an cylindrical sculptural form with the Matisse leaves that are in many of his paintings and the scissor cut-paper collages. He produced these when he was no longer able to paint. With the proper lighting the shadows that this piece casts are a delight to see. I have made many Matisse pieces as he is one of my favorite painters. His shapes are simple and elegant and no one can draw a curve line as clean as he did.

My signature, Alan Adler is on the bottom.

Also, if you have a moment check out other Wood Arts in my Etsy store. This is a One of a Kind piece as are all the items I make in my studio in Montvale, NJ USA.

Studio

The wood lathe is my primary tool. It is with this machine that I form the shape whether it be a bowl, platter, vase or an art object. Once I am happy with the structure I take the piece to the workbench where I may spend several hours enhancing the piece with pyrography which is a wood branding technique, carving, staining or a variety of these and other processes.

Care for wood art

Keep out of direct sunlight and minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels.

Do not wash with water, if necessary use only a damp cloth

Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore the luster. I like beeswax, walnut oil or mineral oil.
