Candy Dish and Lid

Description

Candy Dish and Lid is part of a series and the challenge to create forty wood bases.  They need to match antique European and Asian bowl lids from the 1700 and 1800′s that are missing their original bases.  This lid is European.  The overall size is 6 inch diameter by 5 high. I created a  Walnut pedestal base to match the porcelain rose lid.

Antiquing Weekend

My wife and I are spending the weekend hoping around antique stores. In a gallery there are forty Asia and European bowl lids from 1700 and 1800’s. They are missing their bases. These items are about to become my first collaboration which took two years.

Curious why they are on display, the dealer explains many traders have drawers filled with lids hoping to find matching bases.  I need these lids.  He is skeptical that I have some of the bases.  Explaining that I am a woodturner and showing my work on my cell phone I promise to create new bases for the lids.  He agrees to sell me eight pieces.

Returning a month later I show him what I have made and gift him the one he favors the most.  Asking if I could purchase the remaining lids he opens a drawer where they are now hiding. He basically gifts them to me with the promise that I show him how the series develops.

I have taken design license to marry the lids with new bases.  The vase on the left is    walnut, the center one is maple and the one on the right is cherry wood.
