Woodturning and Maple Burl Tons of character in this Maple Burl Bowl between the hard wood and the new yellow sapwood. It does not get better than this. My artist signature is on base. What is Burl? When you see a round bump on a tree that is a burl. It is not a tumor or tree cancer. This is a defensive action the tree uses to protect itself after insect invasion or storm damage. Burl is highly sought after by wood workers because of the grain patterns that are exhibi
Maple Salad Bowl This Stunning Maple Salad Bowl is rich in color from the heartwood growth that occurs near the center of the tree. The white sapwood is new growth growing close to the bark. This bowl shows unique contrasting features between the heartwood and sapwood. This wood bowl features a slight concave rim. Utilitarian Centerpiece Maple is a common wood in the Northeast. The colors in this piece are extraordinary. They are rich and the wood turns beautifully. Handm
Handmade Ambrosia Bowl This Ambrosia Display Bowl is of the Maple species. It is handmade on a wood lathe. The Ambrosia Beetles enter the wood and create these wonderful markings. Each bowl has different markings. I see a crab crawling on the beach. The markings are from insect damage as the beetles infest the tree. As they eat the tree fibers they leave behind these brown markings. The dots in the markings are holes where the insects enter and exit the wood. Eventually
Description Vanilla Chocolate Swirl Burl came out of a 800 pound maple burl that I harvested with a friend on a llama farm. My best advice for you if you get to a llama farm and the animals are fenced in with wire do not to go close enough to touch that wire. It maybe electrified and that is not a fun experience. The Burl was worthwhile. Every slice of this burl yields unique patterns of lines and textures. Picture a beautiful handmade wood bowl similar Vanilla Chocolate

The spalting pattern in this Maple wood makes me think of the movement of the plates which cause these powerful events. The small chip in the rim is an insect hole representing the damage from the aftershocks. The size is 6 inches in diameter by 2.5 Inches tall. Spalting Wood Spalting is the process where wood begins to decay. When a tree is on the ground it
Description Maple Bowl with rim features beautiful and unique grain patterns. The size is 8 inch diameter by 2 inches high. Every once in a while I get an incredible piece of wood like this. My theory is that the uglier the raw material appears it is hiding a beautiful interior. Such is the case with the log from which this wood bowl came. Wood Grain and Patterns The patterns in a wood log are actually predictable as a Maker gains experience processing wood for projects.
Description Maple Hollow Form Bowl is a style of woodturning that references a bowl with a small opening at the top. It takes skill and practice to remove most of the interior wood because you cannot see what is happening. My wife thinks they are useless, but many turners enjoy making them. The size is 9.5 inch diameter by 6 inches high. Here is a link to another hollow form piece Dragonfly Hollow Form Vase David Ellsworth invented the Hollow Form Style for woodturning.
