Rice Bowl with Gold Band - Negro Nuri - Lacquerware Bowl -Japanese Style

Rice Bowl with Gold Band - This piece explores techniques used to simulate antique Japanese Lacquerware. Usually done with Urushi, a toxic resin from a tree I am using special paints and layering them and rubbing away the red layers to expose the previously painted black color. The bowl features a gold band inlaid into a cut recess and filled with gold micro beads. This item is in the form of a rice bowl. It can be used as a display piece of art or have a utilitarian use as a jewelry keeper or catch all for rings and things. The shape is turned on a wood lathe then hours are spent layering paint, smoothing the surface and covering with a different color and repeating the process. The piece is 5 1/2 inch diameter by 4 inches tall.  This piece will bring years of enjoyment and conversation with friends when displayed on a table or shelf.  It is also a great gift item.  Not to be considered food safe.

Care for your bowl

  • Keep out of direct sunlight

  • Do not wash with water, if necessary use only a damp cloth
  • Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore luster.  I like beeswax, walnut oil and mineral oil
