Spice Containers is a series of handmade Salt and Pepper Shakers made on the wood lathe. These Spice Containers feature food safe stainless steel caps and rubber stoppers. Rubber stoppers are better than cork which has a tendency to disintegrate over time. The stainless steel will not corrode from the salt and will provide years of satisfaction.
I use a variety of different wood species to make these items interesting and colorful. They may include Mahogany, Sycamore, Walnut, Ash and Tri Color Wood laminations. The shakers comfortably fit into one’s hand as a utilitarian object should.
Do you know that wood turning goes back to the time of the Ancient Egyptians? Most woodturning until the early 1970’s was to make items for preparing and serving food. It is a relatively new art form as the forms are moving aways from bowls towards sculptural items and wood art. There is still a group of turners known as “Wood Purists” who object to these changes. This includes decorating wood with paint, stains or pyrography. Many of the new turners are happy to explore new directions and the experience of making non utilitarian forms. Afterall wood does grow on trees and it is another form of a canvas for an artist.
I design and produce all of my products in my studio in Montvale, New Jersey, USA. My primary tool is the Robust wood lathe, but secondary operations will include sanding and finishing with a protective coating. Then buffing and polishing are requirements to enhance the beauty of all wood items that I create.
