Description
These wooden Summer Flowers are an experiment to simulate plant forms from Mother Nature. They are to look like the flowers of an Impressionist Painter. The process is includes turning, carving and airbrush painting.
These Summer Flowers are made from freshly cut tree branches. The diameter of the flower head is the approximate size of the branch. I place a twelve inch length on the lathe and shape the bulb section, the stem and finally the flower. It is a fun process as it is totally freehand. Once the form is complete I take the flowers to the workbench. There I carve the details such as petals, texture on the stems and stamens. Once the sculptural aspects are complete I use an airbrush to add layers of color stain and finally a protective finish coating.
These flowers look best in groups and the color variations and shapes have no boundaries. I am certain this is a series that I will continue to develop and it will evolve into some unusual forms.

Studio
I make all items in my Montvale, New Jersey, USA studio. My primary machine is my three horsepower Robust lathe. I can turn a two hundred pound log into a furniture stool or make a one once bangle. The machine offers incredible control, but I still have to complete the piece at the workbench. Sometimes I may spend more time at the bench refining the piece than i did at the lathe forming the shape. Time is not a factor as I find the process a form of meditation.
