These colorful Salt and Pepper Shaker are handmade on the wood lathe. The woods are Sycamore and Mahogany which offer a strong contrast in colors to represent the white color of salt and the brown and black color of pepper. Sycamore is a very interesting wood that I think it is underrated. Often Sycamore compares to maple, but I find the grain patterns much more interesting. In the photo you can see fine pattern lines that are distinctive of sycamore. The bark is also unusual looking with its smooth and lumpy bark The Mahogany wood is highly sought after for furniture making and is never disappointing.
The cap is food safe stainless steel and there is a food safe grade rubber stopper rather than a cork plug which will not last. The item size is 3 inches tall and 1 3/4 in diameter. Most importantly, the high gloss finish first offers a protective finish and is food safe as well.

Here is a great reference from Wikipedia explaining everything you need to know about a Woodturning lathe. I didn’t realize that they go back to the ancient Egyptians https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lathe
I design all of my items in my studio in Montvale, NJ USA. Should you purchase from AATurning I guarantee it is an Alan Adler original. I do not sell any third party items.
Care for Wood Items
Keep out of direct sunlight
Minimize exposure to wide swings in humidity levels
Do not wash with water, use only a damp cloth
Wax lightly with a quality food safe wax or oil and buff to restore luster. I like beeswax or walnut oil. Mineral Oil is also good.
