Pinecone and Acorn Vase features a casting of a whole bunch of Acorn Caps and Pinecones in blue tinted resin. Unsure that this concept was going to work, it was a worth exploring.
The project started by collecting a bucket of acorn caps and pinecones. They were placed into a plastic container that was then filled with resin. When hard, the cast block of resin with the seed pods is then mounted on the lathe. Revolving at a high speed a hand held tool cuts into the casting and plastic shavings began to fly as the form of a vase began to take shape. Once the outside shape is complete I reverse the part on the lathe and the interior is cut to complete the vase.
The outcome is pleasing and the part is rather unique. Most viewers are unable to identify the acorns or the pinecone which appears as a rose in the foreground. I have used this technique to make jewelry items, https://www.aaturning.com/product/star-anise-pendant-spice-jewelry-resin-chef-gift-foodie-necklace-handmade/ but it was my first attempt at making a vase. The process is something worth developing further.
I design and produce all these unique items in my studio in New Jersey, USA.
