Bog Oak Bowls

Bog Oak Bowls

Bog Oak Bowls from 2000 year old wood salvaged from Eastern European river beds. Bog Oak is one of the most expensive woods in the world as the process to bring the material to market is so expensive. Oak trees are typically the species that have been buried under the river beds for thousands of years. Deprived of oxygen the wood does not rot. It absorbs minerals and turns black and very dense. These logs are found usIng sonar. Carbon age testing dates these logs back 5000 years. These trees grew when Egyptians were building the Pyramids and the Roman Empire was at its peak.

Bog Oak Material

An importer of Bog Oak slabs asked me to test the product for turning potential. Already a successful product for furniture making I found that the material difficult to fabricate. It is not solid and there are voids within the slabs. While turning a bowl a large opening would appear and the bowl would fall apart. Bog Oak material Is excellent for jewelry because it has beautiful texture and the voids can be filled with resin.

Studio

I design all my items in my New Jersey, USA studio. My primary tool is the wood lathe. Once I create a form I take the piece to the workbench where I will use a variety of techniques to enhance the piece. I enjoy working with unique materials and to have an opportunity to explore new ideas and processes. My wood turning journey is incredible and I enjoy sharing my experience with you.
