A swarm of colorful night time Dragonflies decorate this Painted Dragonfly Vase. The size is 9 1/2 inches tall with 6 1/2 diameter at top tapering to 3 1/2 inches at base. Pyrography and iridescent paints decorate this vase. This item sold on the first day of showing.
A vase like Painted Dragonfly Vase is more difficult to make than a bowl because of the depth and the ability to reach the base with available tools. Additionally a deep piece will vibrate during the cutting process. This requires a steady rest to hold the piece firmly in place. Making a bowl the turner has easy access to the bottom of the form. Also, on a technical level most bowls are made with the wood grain running horizontal to the form. With a vase the artist is cutting directly into the end grain which is more challenging.
I enjoy making vase forms and continuing with the decorating process which may include carving, pyrography a branding technique, piercing, staining and painting. Here is a vase with airbrush decoration. Butterfly Vase

I design all of my art in my New Jersey Studio, USA. I divide my time between shaping the form on a wood lathe and then adding decorative features and the finishing process at the workbench. Rarely do I keep track of the amount of time it takes to make a piece as the process and experience is much more important to me.
